Sustainability

We have learned so much from la cultura of pasta making.
How to cook better, how to eat better and, most importantly, how to treat our planet better.

Where we are

“Italianità” (“Italian-ness)” is not just about living la dolce vita. Abiding by the Italian principles of simplicity, community and resourcefulness, we follow a “reduce, reuse, recycle” model. We know we still have a way to go, but here are a few milestones that we are proud of:

  • Shifting to 100% recyclable or compostable packaging

  • Implementing our reusable packaging scheme

  • Introducing 100% compostable wool insulation that would otherwise be wasted in the fashion industry

  • Our Mission

Our mission is to help people enjoy a five star trattoria experience, but from their homes and with less waste. While developing the concept for his fresh pasta business, our founder Alessandro was shocked to learn that over 80% of food goes to waste in a typical fine dining restaurant. Our pre-order model, predictive technology and pre-portioned product means we only order what we need and so food waste is minimal.

OUR MISSION IS TO BE A 100% ZERO-WASTE BUSINESS BY 2025

    Giving Back

Because sustainability is as much about people as it is about the planet. We promise to do all that we can to support the communities that need it most. Here are some of the ways we’ve tried to help make someone’s day when times were tough:

    #PastaCare

With the help of our customers, we raised over £20,000 for Age UK to support the elderly during the pandemic.

    #RallyForRestaurants

We donated over £10,000 in support of our favourite restaurants when lockdown closed their doors.

    #ClapForCarers

We dropped off bundles of fresh pasta kits to feed our NHS heroes at three of London’s busiest hospitals.

    #PumpkinRescue

This Halloween, we created a series of “wonky” pasta dishes made from pumpkin flesh that would otherwise be wasted, donating £1 from each dish to food waste charity FareShare.

    #MindUK

As lockdown continues to make it challenging to spend time with those we love, we've relaunched our #PastaCare packages in support of leading mental health charity Mind UK.

    #AgeUK

On the 14th March 2020, a heartbreaking image of an elderly gentleman standing amidst stripped supermarket shelves did the rounds on social media. Spurred into action by this stark reality, from this moment we felt our role shift and it became our duty to get food to vulnerable people up & down the country. We decided to launch a  ‘Pasta Care Package’ in partnership with Age UK, the UK’s leading charity for older people. The concept was simple, yet effective: whenever customers ordered and sent the kit of three recipes to the door of someone who really needed it, the charity received a £5 donation from us.

    #RallyForRestaurants

When lockdown hit, our co-founder Finn relayed the challenges his father Mark Lagun, an award-winning restauranteur in Newcastle, was facing to the team. We decided we needed to do something to support food businesses which were most acutely affected by Covid-19. With the hospitality industry on its knees around us, we set to work mapping out a campaign of chef-collaborations under the hashtag #RallyForRestaurants, where 20 percent of profits from each dish would be donated to the restaurant involved. To date, we are proud to have launched regional recipe collaborations in support of six wonderful neighbourhood restaurants who share our faith in fresh philosophy - Norma London, Maremma Brixton, Wild by Tart, Enoteca Rabezzana, Leggero and Mark Lagun's The Earl of Pitt Street

    #ClapForCarers

At the peak of the pandemic, it was an honour to be able to nourish our amazing NHS doctors & nurses in the best way we know how: with a supply of fresh pasta! We are eternally grateful for the frontline workers who have and continue to work tirelessly and heroically so as to nurse our society through these bleak times. We hope our food was able to bring a smile at the end of a long shift to those that so need and deserve it.

    #PumpkinRescue

Did you know the vast majority of pumpkins actually end up in landfill - right after October 31st? That’s why, this Halloween, we created a series of “wonky” pasta dishes, made from pumpkin flesh that would otherwise be wasted, with £1 from each dish sold donated to support leading food waste charity FareShare. FareShare is the UK’s longest running food redistribution charity. Born out of the belief that no good food should go to waste, especially when people are going hungry, they take good quality surplus food from right across the food industry and get it to almost 11,000 frontline charities and community groups. Every week they provide enough food to create almost a million meals for vulnerable people.

    #MindUK

Mind are a charity who provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. They campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. We are donating £5 per "Pasta Care" Package sold  to Mind in support of their mission to be there for everyone who needs help during this mental health emergency we are experiencing.

    I WANT TO KNOW MORE

    Can I recycle my packaging?

Yes, all our packaging is recyclable or biodegradable. From our tagliatelle pouches to our ravioli trays, 98% of our packaging is made of recyclable cardboard and our sauce sachets are fully biodegradable.

Do you operate a take back scheme for packaging?

Yes - ice packs included! As a subscription service, reuse is a fundamental part of our business model. Simply get in touch with our helpful customer success team on chef@pastaevangelists.com, and they will be happy to send a free postage label to return packaging and ice-packs for reuse.

How do you deal with food wastage?

By using predictive models for planning orders and pre-portioning our food, we have very minimal food waste. Any dishes we do not sell are not destined for landfill - we’re working with The Felix Project London to redistribute our food waste to their network of local charities and schools that provide food support to vulnerable people.

I’m feeling creative. Do you have any tips for repurposing your packaging at home?

Of course! We love finding resourceful ways to give materials a new life - the liner in our boxes, for example, is a plastic-free alternative made from scraps of denim that would otherwise go to waste in the fashion industry. From keeping their plants watered during the drier months to creating a dog blanket, we have been endlessly inspired by all the creative ways our evangelists have reused our packaging! Our ice packs are also amazing for summer picnics…

Have Pasta Evangelists signed up to the Better Chicken Commitment?

Whilst PASTA EVANGELISTS currently uses no chicken in our menu, we have signed on to the Better Chicken Commitment to raise animal welfare standards across the entire industry.

    We try our best!
