Mirto is an ancient elixir that symbolizes the hospitality of Sardinia. This dark red coloured liqueur (40% vol.) is made from the infusion of Myrtle berries. The biblical plant is considered a symbol of civilization that brings well-being and prosperity. Mirto ideally closes Sardinian meals like a ‘digestivo’. Especially in summertime, when the sun is setting, and you’ve just indulged in a sumptuous agriturismo dinner, a good digestive, served cold in a shot glass, with an aromatic and persistent profile is the best thing. The right way to have it: small sips only!
Every Sardinian family practically makes myrtle liqueur at home, often to gift or offer to relatives and friends, with the classic catchphrase: "Is it true that the myrtle I make is the best you have ever tasted?" In fact, each family has its own recipe, with variants including the dosage of berries, alcohol and choice of honey or sugar.
Myrtle leaves and twigs are also used to flavour various dishes, especially meat and game, and as a decorative garnish for dishes, especially in festive or rustic settings.
Some have expressed difficulties in waiting until the end of the meal to taste this
Mediterranean elixir, so here’s a new way to enjoy it; as an aperitivo: the Mirto Spritz!
Mirto Spritz Recipe
- 90ml extra dry prosecco
- 60ml Mirto Liqueur
- Splash soda water or unflavoured sparkling water
- slice orange or a couple of fresh berries, to garnish
- Fill a tumbler glass with ice. Allow it to cool, then drain any excess water.
- Add the Mirto, followed by the prosecco, and a splash of soda water.
- Stir gently to combine, then garnish and serve - salute!
