Rieder Lagrein Alto Adige, Castelfeder, 2015
Lagrein is an indigenous grape, growing only in the hills of Alto-Adige, in South Tyrol, Northern Italy. On the border with Switzerland and Austria, the Austro-Hungarian territory was occupied by Italy at the end of the first world war, and incorporated as an Italian state in 1926. It was re-taken during WWII despite Mussolini's diplomatic efforts to preserve it, and reinstated at the end of the war. It's no surprise, then, to find more than a scent of the German language here, with a higher proportion of German speakers than Italian in the region.
We have selected this wine with Jeroboam's for its harmonious, soft tannins, giving a smooth taste. Its intense and complex bouquet and fresh perfume of wild berries and violets makes it ideal for deeper, meaty dishes like our Sausage & Saffron Campidanese sauce.
